Manager Digital Enterprise News

CityNews and 680News are looking for a news leader to oversee our growing digital properties. Based out of the City Toronto newsroom at Yonge & Dundas, you will be responsible for creating strategy for innovative digital storytelling and cross-platform integration.  You will lead the team in original enterprise content and day-to-day operation of the site, mobile apps and social media. Working alongside our product team, you will be a newsroom leader in enhancing the user experience and keeping CityNews.ca and 680News.com on the forefront of online news. This role is a key part of the newsrooms’ management teams.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Coaches and directs work of digital and broadcast content creators (digital and broadcast reporters, writers, producers, editors, video editors) when creating enterprise content on digital platforms
  • Create, develop and continuously update breaking and agenda news strategies, working closely with the CityNews and 680 News production staff and reporters
  • Creates varied approaches of telling stories, using digital tools in new ways
  • Focus areas include (but are not limited to): enterprise and investigative journalism, the most complex storytelling the newsroom creates
  • Oversees planning and production of in-depth digital pieces
  • Encourages all content creators to create multi-platform stories
  • Generate and pitch news and feature stories
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and competitors
  • Stays abreast of how stories are performing, using analytics tools
  • Also acts as the deputy editor for agenda and breaking news, leading the staff when the breaking news editor is not on shift
  • Report, write and publish breaking-news content
  • Monitor news wires and publish relevant content
  • Ensure site contains and is updated with the very latest local, national and international news stories
  • Distribute content via social media
  • Engage with viewers/readers via social media
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of newsroom experience in a digital/leadership role
  • Proven experience in change management is an asset
  • Journalism degree or diploma (or equivalent)
  • Experience with an enterprise-grade large-scale CMS
  • Passion for the web and digital-content creation
  • Knowledge of social-media best practices
  • In-depth knowledge of CP Style
  • Excellent leadership, communication, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of HTML an asset
  • Strong knowledge and interest in news, politics and current events
  • Strong production, editorial and storytelling skills
  • The ability to work independently and within a team in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
