Voice Writer/Respeaker Trainee

In response to this growth we are seeking articulate, organized and self-motivated team players to train as voice writers to produce closed captioning for live and prerecorded broadcast content by respeaking the spoken word into voice recognition software for conversion into text. Editing and timecoding captions for prerecorded content also forms a part of the job.

Located in Calgary, Alberta, and reporting to the head of our newly created voice writing division, the ideal candidate will have a combination of the following skills and competencies:

  • A university degree in English or other degree preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated excellence in spoken and written English, including diction, spelling, grammar and meticulous attention to detail
  • An articulate, clear and strong speaking voice
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and thrive in an environment of evolving technologies and processes
  • Demonstrated time-management skills
  • Ability to respond calmly, think quickly, and edit “on the fly” in the high pressure environment of respeaking live television context
  • Ability to prioritize and produce high quality text to tight deadlines for taped programming
  • Ability and desire to work cooperatively with others as part of a team and to share and receive information enthusiastically
  • Ability to take initiative, work flexibly, and adapt to changing circumstances positively
  • Desire to own the quality and timely delivery of work at all times
  • An interest in a very wide range of television output including, news, sports, politics, legislative and entertainment programming
  • Particular interest in geography, local, national, and international current affairs and sports
  • Experience proofreading, editing, reviewing and correct texting and scripts for 100% accuracy would be an asset
  • Familiarity or experience with Dragon Speech Recognition software is an asset but not a requirement

Given the 24/7 nature of broadcast television, voice writers must be able and willing to work shifts on a rotating basis that will cover morning, day, and overnight time blocks.

Hourly rate increases upon successful completion of the training period.
