Communication Specialist

Reporting to the Communication Supervisor, this position provides support to our Human Services partners in communicating with various audiences about Regional programs and services, and building trust and confidence with the public. You will be responsible for managing communication activities for designated internal partners in the areas of strategic consultation and advice, integrated communications, issues management and crisis communications.

  • Provides strategic communication consultation and advice on matters of strategy development, corporate communications, media relations, creative and promotional writing, social media and crisis communications
  • Uses complex influence strategies and political acumen in order to problem solve and offer recommendations
  • Works collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams on the planning, development, execution and evaluation of integrated communications strategies
  • Plans, develops, executes and evaluates communication strategies and activities in collaboration with designated internal partners, in addition to working pro-actively and effectively with other section staff
  • Leads the planning and execution of communication activities during a crisis affecting designated internal partners
  • Liaises with external communications vendors on highly-sensitive files, when required, and acts as communications lead
  • Supports change management strategies and influences strategic direction
  • Researches and writes a variety of communication materials, such as news releases, newsletter copy, advertisements, brochures, web content, letters to the editor and speaking notes
  • Analyzes issues, prepares messages and coaches spokespeople
  • Ensures timely response to media inquiries by working closely with internal partners to gather information, develop key messages and arrange media interviews
  • Follows the Communication Services Style Guide, the Canadian Press Style-book, the Corporate Visual Identity standards and the framework for writing feature stories and news releases



  • A college diploma or university degree in Marketing, Journalism, Public relations, or a related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of related experience, ideally in a strategic or advisory position
  • Demonstrated competence in working with senior management or Regional Council/elected officials
  • Experience managing crisis communications during emergency responses is required
  • Experience in community consultation, specifically related to difficult or contentious issues, is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and political acumen to cultivate and maintain proactive partner relations
  • Experience in understanding how and when to integrate social media into communication strategies
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-divisional, cross-departmental and multi-stakeholder teams
  • Effective planning and project management skills
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and deliver projects on time in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to balance creativity and innovation with process orientation for planning and execution
  • Advanced computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and verbal skills
  • Experience with managing multifaceted communication campaigns
  • Strong knowledge of media relations principles and experience working with the media 


Contract Duration: up to 13 months 

Location: 10 Peel Centre Dr., Brampton 

Hours of work: 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, 35 hours/week; flexibility to travel and work evening and/or weekends on occasion
