Lead FX Artist

The Lead FX Artist leads an assigned team in ensuring that all effects deliverables are completed fully and in line with the production schedule and the Director’s overall vision. This role is also required to design and implement atmosphere for personally assigned shots, and attend effects reviews for all assigned shots. The Lead Effects Artist ensures resolution of technical issues and performs additional duties as required.

Job Responsibilities: (may include but are not limited to)

Lead assigned team in ensuring that all effects deliverables are completed fully and in line with production schedule and Director’s overall vision

Support team members by providing artistic direction and assisting with technical difficulties

Assist Effects Supervisor and Assistant Production Manager in assigning work to team members, and oversee individual progress and performance

Assist Department Head by providing feedback for the annual performance review process

Provide regular team progress updates for Assistant Production Manager

Review and ensure sequence continuity for all effects shots prior to review by Director/Clients

Create FX for personally assigned shots using Maya and other software to ensure continuity and flow within and between shots and sequences

Attend effects reviews for assigned sequences

Anticipate, communicate, and ensure resolution of technical issues

Troubleshoot and debug shot problems

Escalate technical issues as required

5+ years of CG Effects production experience (prior Lead experience prefer)

Feature film experience an asset

Completed post-secondary education in classical or 3D animation, art fundamentals, or other relevant areas of study

Strong working knowledge of Maya, Houdini, and others

Strong knowledge of Maya Fluids as well as some knowledge of the development and design of FX water

Experience with Maya particles/dynamics and particle expressions

Compositing principles (preferably using Fusion)

Any scripting language is a plus

Demonstrated leadership skills

Clear vision of the creative requirements and assets of the FX team and an ability to create appropriate prototypes/examples and disseminate workflows accordingly

Background in traditional art an asset

General understanding of animation styles and techniques as well as an excellent comprehension of animation production for film and/or television

Great understanding of the animation production pipeline as a whole with an understanding of adjacent department workflows as well as how the Effects Department interacts with the overall production process

Good creative and technical problem-solving skills with the ability to check own work

Ability to learn quickly and comprehend custom in-house production tools

Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with key stakeholders (i.e. other departments, production, clients, etc…)

Demonstrated ability to work productively and willingness to take initiative in a team environment

Ability to prioritize tasks, meet tight deadlines, and perform to standard in a fast-paced environment

High level of independence and strong sense of reliability
