Stage Management and Production Assistant

Performing Arts at Banff Centre is looking for an organized Stage Management and Production Assistant to help provide the smooth and efficient presentation of Banff Centre programs, projects, and events during the Banff Summer Arts Festival and the Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC). The position also serves other Banff Centre departments, as required.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Prepare and distribute rehearsal schedules, including lighting, sound and staging requirements in conjunction with the Technical Manager.

  • Set up and operate a basic public address system and recording system, as required.

  • Liaise with performers to determine their performance needs and provide staging.

  • Liaise with artistic personnel and with Box Office personnel to determine house set-up needs for each event.

  • Prior to performance, ensure that performers are present and ready, that necessary equipment and staging requirements are ready, that house is prepared to open and that lighting and audio cues have been checked.

  • During performances ensure the efficient running of program; and, call or execute any necessary lighting and audio cues. Be prepared to manage all aspects of concert operation as required (including emergency procedures, etc).

  • After performances, clear stage of all chairs, cables, music scores etc. Prepare show and/or special events reports in accordance with established procedures.

  • When appropriate, assist performers with their professional development, as regards professional performance practice.

  • Assist Production Coordinators with ensuring studios and huts are in working order, including all chairs, stands, humidifiers and studio furniture.

  • In conjunction with the Production Manager, monitor the condition of Performing Arts facilities and equipment and recommend both capital acquisition and maintenance requirements for Performing Arts.

  • At the beginning and end of each major program, project or conference, restore the studios and huts to their “neutral” set-up, and ensure that the inventory of chairs, stands, and studio furniture is in working order.

 

Qualification and Educational Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school with a keen interest in performing arts. A background in music is an asset.

  • Operational knowledge of theatre lighting, sound, and audio-visual equipment.

  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.

  • Knowledge of File Maker Pro and Farmer’s Wife is an asset.

  • Excellent communication and team work skills in order to interact with technical staff (audio, production, technicians), artistic staff, faculty and participants.

  • Flexibility, and the ability to multi-task and to make prompt decisions.

  • Tact in dealing with directors, faculty and participant performers working under pressure.

  • The ability to remain calm under stress and meet strict deadlines.

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.

 

Special Requirements


Candidates offered a position with Banff Centre, in this capacity, will be required to obtain a criminal record check verifying a clear record before a final job offer can be made.


The varied requirements of this position require working irregular hours and some weekends.


This position will be required to climb ladders to hang lights or rig other gear and will require regular lifting and movement of heavy gear.


This position requires a valid Alberta Class 4 driver’s license.


Employment Terms & Benefits


In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, termed hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probation period.


This position pays between $16.98 and $18.26 per hour, depending on experience, working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
