Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking a digital strategist who will lead HSN’s creative design and

multimedia content to support internal and external communications strategies and overall corporate

goals. The successful candidate will lead the planning and execution of multimedia visual materials

and campaigns and bring sight and sound together to promote HSN’s brand identity.

The successful candidate should have a minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Communications,

Marketing, Public Relations, or Digital media from an accredited College. Preference will be given to

candidates with a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or

a related field from an accredited University. We are looking for a minimum of five (5) years’

experience in a communications department within a health care environment, as well as a minimum

of two (2) years’ design and content experienced, as evidenced in a portfolio. Preference will be given

to candidates with experience working in a health care environment, and with experience working on

content management systems and web design. Bilingualism is an asset

Position: Communications Specialist - Content and Marketing

KEY FUNCTION:
Lead HSN’s creative design and multimedia content to support internal and external communications
strategies and overall corporate goals. Lead the planning and execution of multimedia visual materials
and campaigns and bring sight and sound together to promote HSN’s brand identity.

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Communications and Community Engagement.

DUTIES:

1. Lead and implement communications strategies that inform and motivate a variety of internal
and external audiences through engaging multimedia visuals and creative content.

2. Work closely with internal brand specialists to create, execute and distribute multimedia tools to
promote corporate initiatives with innovation and creativity.

3. Lead the development, production and dissemination of original content including videos,
photography and other interactive pieces for use on HSN’s web and digital platforms.

4. Provide writing and editing expertise to make internal programs and initiatives compelling and
easy-to-understand.

5. Work collaboratively with content experts to research, write, and edit print and digital materials
6. Provide expertise in the development of multimedia materials, video production, interactive media

and electronic display content.
7. Participate in planning briefs to grasp client needs and specifications, and offer communication

options.
8. Lead and advise programs through the content and branding process.
9. Create and transfer documents for display on internal ad screens, web, social media and print, to

respond to internal business needs.
10. Design and produce print materials (e.g. education brochures, reports, newsletters, graphics,

videos) and ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
11. Evaluate effectiveness of communications programs and vehicles by establishing metrics,

conducting surveys and inquiries on an ongoing basis.
12. Liaise with external professional services such as design firms and printers as required.
13. Optimize the accuracy, design and accessibility of content for web and social platforms.
14. Ensure all corporate materials are consistent with visual identity standards and meet the French

Language Services requirements of the Corporation.
15. Participate in the marketing and branding of corporate events and activities (e.g. Annual General

Meeting, community engagement forums, employee/volunteer recognition, fundraising initiatives,
and conferences).

16. Maintain an inventory of digital content for team and organizational use.
17. Develop and draft policies and standards pertaining to hospital communications.
18. Support HSN and HSNRI’s strategic corporate goals through digital and traditional marketing.
19. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to

achieve goal outcomes.
20. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and

safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
21. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
22. Perform other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

1. Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in a relevant field (e.g. Communications, Marketing, Public
Relations, or Digital Media) from an accredited college.

2. A four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related
field, from an accredited University is preferred.

3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is
required.


EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a communications department within a health

care environment.
2. Minimum of two (2) years design and content experience, as evidenced in a portfolio.
3. Experience with Content Management Systems and digital marketing including search engine

optimization, digital analytics and content development for web and social media.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

1. Demonstrated superior creativity, proven writing and editing skills and analytical ability.
2. Demonstrated proficiency in upfront video and photography capture, and production skills.
3. Demonstrated understanding of the creative process in a corporate environment.
4. Demonstrated ability to match project needs with appropriate levels of time investment.
5. Demonstrated understanding of online platforms and analytics, and of ways to apply them to

communications strategies and tools.
6. Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.
7. Demonstrated knowledge of hospital accountability.
8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and

continue improvement.
10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word,

Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Premiere, Illustrator and
Photoshop)).

11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
12. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing

priorities and challenging deadlines.
