What it’s like working at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role

CBC Edmonton is looking for a digital associate producer to join our team working on Radio Active, our afternoon current affairs radio program.

As a member of a close-knit team, you will write and publish multimedia-rich stories for our digital platforms. This could include writing stories, selecting or taking photos, posting video, writing headlines, soliciting and verifying user-generated content (UGC) and crowdsourcing material to the benefit of all CBC News and Current Affairs platforms.

You have lots of ideas and a fresh approach to telling stories in the digital world. You know how to write, edit, and package digital news and current affairs content. You know the ins and outs of social media, and know how to select and edit photos and encode video. You are comfortable chasing your own stories as well as writing them based on interviews gathered by your colleagues.

You will play an integral role in the Local Services strategy with a focus on three priorities:

  • Content: In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout the country. You’re innovative and will try new things, new workflows and new story treatments. You inspire others to do the same.
  • Community: As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population in Canada and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.
  • Culture: You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of two years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas.
  • A strong proven connection to the community.
  • A proven work ethic in diverse teams.
  • Experience and proven ability with various technical platforms such as social media tools, photo editing, digital cameras, live chats, content management systems, etc.
  • Ability to write stories based on gathered interviews or live-streamed events, filling gaps as needed.
  • A willingness to learn and tackle new tasks across all CBC platforms.
  • Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague.
  • High energy and enthusiasm towards journalism.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company, other classes considered an asset.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.

Please include additional documentation or a link to your online demo or website, blog or video in your cover letter.
