Music Teacher

We are seeking a dynamic music teacher who will engage and inspire our JK-Grade 8 students in the study, practice, and performance of music. This individual will use diverse teaching strategies in the instruction of music theory and practice and have a proven record of success in motivating students to participate enthusiastically in learning and performing music. They will also work as a strong team member, contributing to the local Hudson and greater Toronto community through performances, concerts, and recitals.


  • Meet and exceed Ontario curricular standards for all JK-Grade 8 music instruction
  • Create an environment of active, engaged learning that meets student needs and establishes a foundation of musical literacy and knowledge
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behaviour for an orderly, productive environment that is highly conducive to learning
  • Select a repertoire of music across genres that are appropriate to students' age and skill level
  • Plan a balanced music program, organizing classroom time to ensure that all instruction, preparation, and rehearsals are accomplished within allotted time frames
  • Use professional best practices, techniques, and materials to achieve learning objectives
  • Assess and monitor all students in both theory and practice, keeping students, homeroom teachers and families meaningfully informed of student progress
  • Keep accurate records of achievement and attendance
  • Regularly check equipment for damage, updating instrument and sound equipment records and arranging repairs and rentals as needed
  • Prepare students as soloists or ensemble members for performances throughout the year
  • Direct and arrange all aspects of annual concerts, recitals, band, and choir performances
  • Assist with sound and lighting and music for Lower School plays
  • Other duties as required

The successful candidate will have:

  • Degree in Music and OCT qualifications
  • Junior and/or Intermediate Qualifications to teach instrumental music
  • Knowledge of Ministry expectations for Grades 4–8
  • Orff accreditation (minimum Level 1)
  • A minimum of three years as a music teacher in an elementary school environment
  • Previous experience teaching instrumental music and a demonstrated knowledge of musical ability in instrumental music
  • Ability to teach vocal music is an asset
  • Proven ability to teach instrumental music and music theory
  • Ability to establish effective rapport with students and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, parents, and teachers
  • Ability to assess and report on student progress in music
  • Experience planning and directing school performances
  • Current computer and other technical knowledge related to music instruction and performance
  • Proficiency with Google Apps for Education
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in music, particularly in mentoring students in Grades 7–8
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instruction and implement constructive feedback
  • A strong desire to engage in the school’s positive and progressive culture
