General Manager

Magnus Theatre, the professional theatre company of Northwestern Ontario is seeking a dedicated and energetic individual for this full-time position. Magnus Theatre is currently celebrating it 50th Anniversary  season and is a member of The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT). Magnus operates an intimate 250 seat theatre located in a beautiful designated heritage building in Thunder Bay and is committed to creating dynamic theatre that addresses the unique needs of our evolving community and region. The General Manager reports directly to the volunteer Board of Directors and works as a member of the management team with the Artistic Director in an effective management partnership.

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Minimum 5 years of management experience in the non-profit sector and/or arts organization; Strong background in management accounting; Proven experience in facility management and infrastructure development; Excellent writing and communication skills; Strong IT skills including network administration, Microsoft Office, Adagio, and Theatre Manager software; Experience with contract negotiation and Artist agreements (CAEA, ADC, PGC), Demonstrated fund-raising experience as well as a passion for the arts are considered assets.

The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair. As head of Administration and a member of the Management Team (Artistic Director and General Manager), the General Manager is responsible for all aspects of the company ina manner consistent with the mission and goals of Magnus Theatre. The General Manager will represent Magnus Theatre in a professional manner; will encourage the highest level of artistic creation and administrative excellence within the company; will actively demonstrate and advance teamwork within the company; and at all times, serve in the best interest of Magnus Theatre Company Northwest Incorporated.



  • Plan, develop, forecast, control and administer the organization's operating and capital budgets.
  • Ensure good cash flow management practices are followed.
  • Develop and maintain financial controls and procedures to govern all financial activities.
  • Obtain and maintain adequate and suitable financing arrangements for the organization; ensure the documents required by the financial institution are provided.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements and show reports for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare budgets based on the planned activities for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare the year-end audit file and assist the auditor.
  • Seek funding opportunities, prepare applications and administer all government, capital and administrative grants. Complete final financial and other reporting requirements.
  • Initiate proactive communications with funding agencies with respect to funding opportunities and existing grants.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate annually the pricing policy of Magnus Theatre. Manage and analyze ticket sales and front of house operations.



  • Develop, implement and oversee administrative organizational procedures as part of the Management Team.
  • Manage human resources, as part of the Management Team, including recruitment, following all HR policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adequate protection of the organization's employees, patrons, Board, premises and assets through insurance(s) and WSIB.
  • Lead all aspects of building maintenance/physical plant and rental agreements with input from the Artistic Director and Production Manager.
  • Present to the Capital Committee an annual building plan that clearly defines recurring plant maintenance requirements and attendant costs.
  • Maintain and distribute the written records of meetings of the Board of Directors and committees of the Board.
  • Maintain the organization's minute book.
  • Ensure the management and security of the organization's databases.
  • Ensure the organization's legal status as a registered charity.
  • Ensure the organization's adherence to Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation {e.g. Corporations return, HST, Employment Standards, Health and Safety etc.)



  • Plan, prepare and lead all fund development initiatives including evaluation and reports to the Board.
  • Direct the organization’s capital campaign across public and private funding sectors by working
  • closely with the theatre’s Board of Directors, capital campaign cabinet, and funder contacts.
  • Develop an annual fundraising campaign to be presented to Fundraising Committee annually to
  • be presented to the Fundraising Committee.
  • Engage the marketing department to assist in marketing the theatre as a whole.



  • Provide the Board of Directors, Board committees and the Artistic Director regular information regarding issues falling under the jurisdiction of the General Manager.
  • Serve as ex-officio member of the Board and as required on committees of the Board.
  • Act as liaison between the company and other City, regional, provincial and national arts and business organizations.
  • Work in respectful collaboration with all staff.
  • Work constructively and cooperatively with the Board of Directors, providing support to ensure
  • information and/or proposals to be presented to the Board reflect appropriate analysis and contribute to the strategic goals of the Company.
  • At all times, serve in the best interest of Magnus Theatre Company Northwest Incorporated.
