Manager of Business Affairs

Our award winning and internationally renowned Toronto based entertainment company is looking for a Manager of Business Affairs who is responsible for the preparation and tracking of all business and legal documents and assisting in all production financing.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for overseeing and administering various production, distribution and development-related business affairs activities, including communicating and tracking contractual obligations, payments, approval requirements
  • Liaising on screen credits, insurance, broadcaster requirements, Canadian-content and tax credit compliance
  • Analyze and advise on rights management and contractual obligations, music, piracy and infringement claims and intellectual property matters (chain of title, trademarks and copyrights)
  • Advise on questions that arise under applicable union and guild collective bargaining agreements
  • Analyze key agreements for key information to production and distribution, prepare deal summaries, credit obligations, contractual restrictions, etc. for all productions
  • Prepare and submit applications for public and private funding sources, including tax credit applications
  • Understand the provincial and federal tax credit and Canadian-content regulations (i.e. OMDC, SODEC, CAVCO), and the compliance regulations for each credit, and assist production with adhering to such requirements.
  • Generate guild signatory and compliance documentation, calculate residuals estimates, and manage the guild process for each project
  • Draft and track the execution of various above-the-line agreements (writers, producers, directors and actors), utilizing legal templates
  • Follow and contribute toward improving “best practices”, as well as creative problem solving and troubleshooting on day-to-day business affairs-production matters
  • Liaise with all other departments including production, finance, distribution, postproduction on various business affairs issues and providing general business affairs support

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5- 7 years business affairs experience and/or equivalent legal and entertainment industry experience
  • Knowledgeable of the Canadian content regulatory system
  • Experienced with industry unions, guilds and a variety of contracts
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize
  • Highly reliable, with the ability to self-manage, problem solve and exercise excellent judgement
  • Able to excel in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
  • Excellent professional verbal and written communication, drafting and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to analyze and summarize
