Your role

Are you the next host of CBC Calgary’s #1 radio morning show?

 

You’re a great listener and a fantastic interviewer.  You are insatiably curious about our city and province.  You’re smart, with a great sense of humour and a love of both the serious and the eccentric. You have a passion for storytelling and connecting with our audiences in all their diversity, whether political, social,economic or cultural. You’re a newsroom leader

 

A quarter of the radio audience in our city listens to the Calgary Eyeopener, and you’re able to connect to all of them.  You have an eclectic range of interests and an ability to make the complex relatable. You know that small stories can be as important as big stories. You are, at heart, a storyteller with a passion for drawing information, stories and accountability out of interview subjects every day.

 

Very importantly, you love early mornings, and strong coffee.

 

What you’ll do as host:

  • Conduct multiple daily live and taped interviews.
  • Write, vet and perform scripts.
  • Interact with your co-host.
  • Perform a variety of tasks associated with the preparation and on-air presentation of program material on radio, digital and social.
  • Create original stories and concepts and work collaboratively to produce them.
  • Build relationships with a diverse cross section of key community members to enhance our understanding of the region and to increase the range of voices and perspectives on the program.
  • Keep on top of important news developments throughout the day with an eye to ensuring the program is always relevant and topical.
  • Moderate and participate in public events, representing the Calgary Eyeopener and CBC Calgary.

  • Widely-read, knowledgeable and nuanced thinker.
  • Strong writer.
  • Exemplary journalistic skills, demonstrated through interviewing critical thinking and innovative storytelling.
  • Openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and differing points of view, is critical.
  • Embraces editorial leadership role and provides ongoing constructive feedback to team.
  • Technical skills, including field recording and audio editing, are an asset.
  • Knowledge of and creative ideas around the use of social media and digital platforms to connect with and grow audiences.
  • Ability to function independently and cooperatively in a team setting.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to build relationships and contacts inside and outside CBC Calgary
  • Genuinely loves public outreach and is an enthusiastic ambassador of public broadcasting and the program.
  • Broad knowledge of the city and Southern Alberta

 

The qualifications you’ll possess:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • At least five years of experience in journalism, reporting and/or hosting.

May be subject to an audition in English and knowledge testing.
