Live-to-air Described Video Vocalist and mixer

Real-time Video Describers

Division: Accessibility Services

Work Status: Contract

Location: Toronto, Ontario

About the Role:

In 2019 the CRTC mandated that content airing within primetime required Described Video. Due to the amount of quick turnarounds in broadcast television live described video and near-live described video processes were required.

These roles require individuals who possess both Pro Tools mixing experience and some form of vocal performance experience because the roles require someone to watch video, describe what is on screen in real-time, and then mix it with program audio to create DV .WAV files. In addition, these roles require individuals to work out of sound booths that are part of the Corus broadcast air chain and describe live-to-air.

Alternating 4 days on and 4 days off, and working as independent contractors, Live and near-live Describers watch Corus’ vast portfolio of entertainment content and describe the key visual developments. Compensation commensurate with experience. Invoicing required.

  • These roles rotate 4 days on and 4 days off in the record spaces at Corus Quay in downtown Toronto. There is no present way to describe live-to-air for Corus outside of Corus Quay.
  • This rotation with another contractor allows for even distribution of weekend and holiday work. Corus entities broadcast 365 days a year. The 4 days on and 4 days off setup allows for workers to know when they will be required and when they won’t.
  • Most work days would be 11am-7pm ET but on some occasions where live DV events (like season finales for reality programming or awards shows) are scheduled later work days might begin at noon or 1pm and end at 8 hours later. A change of this kind would be communicated weeks in advance.
  • Due to the on-air nature of this role workers are expected to communicate any illness that could jeopardize an upcoming live-to-air booking as soon as possible to allow for alternate arrangements to be made.
  • Weekend & holiday work requirements will occur as the 4 days on and 4 days off schedule rotates onward. Some workers can shift swap if convenient for both.
  • This role requires vocalizing live-to-air in a manner similar to being a live narrator or announcer. Your voice will be heard by listeners of described video.
  • Due to the fast-paced nature of live TV individuals strong multi-tasking skill is required.
  • Live TV requires punctuality. References will be checked for previous punctuality.
  • Though the spoken Live DV word rate is consistently below that of radio or podcast hosting this role requires the ability to be able to voice daily for hours at a time with pauses occurring during existing dialogue, music or commercial breaks.
  • This role requires interaction with other members of Corus in a positive, respectful and courteous manner.
  • This role requires the ability to work in a team environment or independently.
  • This role requires monitoring of email inbox for info on scheduling, updates related to video availability and status updates.
  • This role requires the creation of offline DV files via near-live DV methods while not describing live-to-air.
  • Other duties as assigned.
